Novell releases netbook SUSE Linux
VANQUISHER OF SCO Novell, which is seeing off a buyout from a vulture capitalist fund, has annouced it will release a SUSE flavour of Meego that is a fully supported Linux operating system for netbooks.
Novell wants Meego to ship pre-installed on a variety of devices from OEMs within a year. SUSE Meego is based on the Meego specification defined by Intel and Nokia and is designed for next-generation netbooks and other mobile devices. It builds on the work done on the Intel’s Moblin and Nokia’s Maemo mobile operating systems.
SUSE Meego runs on Intel Atom processor-based devices and it is being shown off at Computex in Taipei, Taiwan.
Novell, which scored a red card from the open source community for dealing with Microsoft, is currently a bit concerned after there was talk about buyouts from outfits wanting its patents. It has been rumoured that up to perhaps as many as twenty hedge funds might be interested in buying Novell and breaking it up.
There had been rumours that Novell was not all that committed to Meego, as it hadn’t been making announcements about it. At the time Novell said that was because it had something in the works and it turns out that it actually did.
