Microsoft Update for Internet Explorer 8 (KB976749)

Important Do not install this update if you have not installed security update 974455. If you install this update without first installing security update 974455, Internet Explorer may not work correctly. If this occurs, uninstall this update, install security update 974455, and then reinstall this update.
To install this update, follow these steps:

  1. Use the following list to find the appropriate link for your version of Internet Explorer and your operating system.
  2. Click the link, and then in the Microsoft Download Center Web page that opens, click Download. If the Download button is not available, you must first click Validate to validate your copy of Windows.
  3. Click Run when you are prompted.
  4. Follow the instructions to install the update.
Known issues with this update

You may be unable to uninstall this update from a computer that is running Windows 2000 by using the Add\Remove Programs item in Control Panel. To work around this issue, follow these steps to manually uninstall this update:

  • If you have Internet Explorer 5.01 installed, follow these steps:
    1. Open the following folder:

      c:\Winnt\$NtUninstallKB976749-IE501SP4-20091019.120000$\Spuninst\

    2. Double-click the Spuninst.exe file.
  • If you have Internet Explorer 6 installed, follow these steps:
    1. Open the following folder:

      C:\Winnt\$NtUninstallKB976749-IE6SP1-20091019.120000$\Spuninst\

    2. Double-click the Spuninst.exe file
