Apple has taken the wraps off their new web browser. Today the company has announced that the Apple Safari 5.0.1 is now available for download, but before you get it on, here are a few details you should know about it.

The specs sheet mentions the fact that one of the biggest additions are the support for extensions. What are extensions you ask? Firefox and Chrome users have been used with extensions for a while now. They’re those small add-ons on your browse that bring flexibility to your daily routine; for example blocking unwanted advertising, showing details about a website (Alexa or Google PageRank values) or enhancing your social networking needs.

Safari Extensions are built with HTML5, CSS3 and JavaScript web standards, and can have all the power and functionality of advanced web applications. Every Safari Extension is signed with a digital certificate from Apple to prevent tampering and to verify that updates to the extension are from the original developer. Safari Extensions are sandboxed, so they can’t access information on a user’s system or communicate with websites aside from those specified by the developer. For increased stability, Safari Extensions run solely in the browser.

So it kind of  makes sense to have extensions on the new Apple Safari 5.0.1, don’t you think?

Other goodies coming with Safari 5.0.1 include the Safari Reader, the Nitro JavaScript engine (which runs JS up to 30 percent faster than Safari 4), full screen playback and closed captions for HTML5 video, and includes a fix for a nasty AutoFill vulnerability.
